April 7th will see the release of ‘Neon Hip’ the highly anticipated second album from West Cork alt-rock band ‘First Class & Coach’. They have built upon the foundations of their debut record and much- lauded ‘The Truth About Honey’ , striving to deliver an upbeat record that nevertheless reaches into some dark corners. This record contains accounts of heartbreak, rage, loss, grief - and yet, hope, which is evident from the three singles, ‘Neon Hip’’ (“Utterly outstanding” Stephen McCauley, BBC Sounds), ‘My oh My’ (“Candidate for Song Of The Year- one of my favourite Irish bands, back with another banger” Ed Smith, Today FM) and ‘SURE’ (“Everything they’ve released has been so, so impressive” Dan Hegarty, RTE2FM), which have been released from the album to date. Once again, Tony Maimone ((Pere Ubu, StudioG Brooklyn) was enlisted to work with the band, co- producing and recording at Black Box Studios, France. The band chose to record in Black Box Studios because, apart from being a great studio with awesome heritage gear, it was an opportunity for the band to escape Ireland, at a time when, “we were all stir-crazy due to the limitations of the Covid pandemic”. The record was mixed in Brooklyn by Tony Maimone. ALBUM ARTWORK The cover image for ‘Neon Hip’ is created entirely by an online Artificial Intelligence engine, whereby written commands or descriptive words generate a visual response. The process can be subtle and each image created is unique. This technology is in its infancy and we were fascinated to use it to express some of the core themes from the record. Artist Statement Geraldine explains “Neon Hip is a lyrical journey but mostly a testament to loss and grief. “The material started forming with no certain intent, after our debut record ‘The Truth About Honey’ – that album really was an exploration of possibilities - a dance to find the band’s sound, I see ‘Neon Hip’ as a gift - remembering someone or something, sonically wrapped – eternally.” With Reuben adding, “Just like everyone else, we use personal feelings and experience to create songs. I wrote the song ‘Neon Hip’ to say sorry to my dead friend Chris Gough and I wrote the lyrics for ‘Yr Life’ as I saw myself growing old with fewer friends and was both sad and ok with it. “Musically I try to make something that sounds pleasing to me and the band first, and if it turns into a song on the set... then I've done my job. Sometimes we just make noise that turns into songs... a case- in-point was ‘No One To Ask’ and ‘No Tomorrow’ – those tracks appeared just weeks before recording” continues Maher. “It’s a privilege to be in a band that has instinct and honesty at its core. FC&C is a project that has grown from a shared, democratic hunger for musical and lyrical expression. We aim to move ourselves first. If we move something else, that is the ultimate reward.” States bass player Jonathan. Neon Hip will be released on April 7 th via FIFA Records and will be available on Vinyl, CD and Digital download.
