Big Romance delve deeper into their signature nonchalant sound with their fourth single, crafting a melancholic summer bop that self reflects as much as it pines for the future. Self Medicate paints a wistfully optimistic image of warm days trapped under a sunshade of hopeless introspection, seeking comfort in nostalgia but ultimately struggling to come to terms with the world moving on. Musically the track sees the band at their most stripped bare, switching up the brash ‘indie meets punk’ sound for something more downtempo and contemplative. The track ebbs and flows through lullaby- esque choruses, delicate acoustic interludes and anthemic shoegaze climaxes. On the track, Dan (vocals/guitar) said: “Self Medicate definitely bears the most weight emotionally in our catalogue so far. It was the hardest song to finish in terms of writing because we knew it needed to take people on a journey. Lyrically, it’s about looking after yourself, and we really feel like the track takes the listener through all the emotions that come with it. The song stemmed from a really dark time and I think the blissful ignorance of ‘self medicating’ to get through it really stuck with me for a long while so it’s nice to be able to let that go. Greenup (lead guitar) wrote this great one-take guitar solo that really brought the song to life and that’s when we knew we could finally put it to bed. It provided a seminal moment of success and achievement to an otherwise emotionally exhausting song and we’re really proud of it.” Self Medicate was recorded at Polestar Studios with in-house engineer, Alex Blamire and produced by Paul Gregory of Lanterns On The Lake. The band hope to build on existing support they’ve garnered with numerous Spotify editorial playlists such as: All New Rock, Hot New Bands and The Punk List amongst others. The band have also previously performed their latest two tracks ‘Sickner’ & ‘Dogfight’ live on BBC Introducing NE and have had consistent radio play on Amazing Radio and BBC.
